When Matt Briggs researched climate change, he realized two things: the problem is very serious, and his typical American home, car and lifestyle were part of that problem. Matt set to work to cut down both energy consumed and carbon dioxide emissions, and has succeeded in reducing yearly energy use more than 80%. By installing high efficiency heating, appliances and trying ‘LED’ lights that are even more efficient than fluorescents, Matt made his existing house very efficient without sacrificing livability. With solar water heating, a solar electric system, and purchase of renewable power from PGE, the house now runs entirely on renewable electricity. Matt drives a hybrid car classified by the EPA as a Super Low-Emitting Vehicle (SLEV). His home’s location in the wooded First Addition, next to Tryon Creek State Park yet close to shopping, school and services, makes it delightful to walk for many daily needs.
lots, lots more, with pictures. :)
