Need help. What would be best environmental charity to get involved with?
I am a (new) member of the WWF, Defenders Of Wildlife, ACLU and Amnesty International. I have a couple of bucks I'd like to throw directly at the environment (I only buy "green" mutual funds - take a look at Winslow Green Growth) and I thought I'd ask my fellow DU'ers for some advice...

1. It kinda depends on what issue you would like to help with the most
Where are you at? Sometimes its easiest to get involved with your local eco groups. I have volunteered some with the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society (local chapters), but I have typically found it most useful to join locally based eco groups (for example we have an Ecology Centre near where I live, a "Growing Hope cultivating community" -that focuses on growing organic food and delivering it to the dorms at the college I go to and so on..)
Its hard to do on the ground work for WWF I would think-I support them as well as DoW with donations though.

Hope that helps.

3. The WWF, Audobon Society and Sierra Club are all semi-evil...

All do some good things and also some shockingly bad things, like advocating killing animals. As far as I'm concerned, animals are part of the environment. The WWF supports clubbing seals to death and animal testing. The Sierra Club regularly supports hunting and even trophy hunting. And the Audobon Society tries to kill some species to protect others.

I like Greenpeace ( ) and Rain Forest Action Network ( ). But others to check out are:

5. Go local
You can do a HUGE amount of good by giving to a local conservation group that it trying to protect open space and ecosystems locally.

Not sure if the OP is an ex-pat or still in the UK
but, if the latter, have a look at

(Edit: Helps you to find small projects by location)
