The solar-powered catamaran Sun 21 cruises in the Rhine near Strasbourg, France, as it heads for New York in a bid to make the first motorised crossing of the Atlantic Ocean without using a drop of fuel.

The five crewmen plan to raise awareness of environmentally friendly forms of energy.

The 14m catamaran, powered by 60sqm of solar panels supplying power to two electric motors, was designed by a team of Swiss solar power enthusiasts.

The first stage of the journey along the Rhine began in Basel, Switzerland.

2. Solar Boats

I do have to remind somebody that without the sun the wind wouldn't exist. Reguardless I had the oportunity to give technical advice along with many associates on a boat that sailed from Hawaii to the U.S.A. mainland. They used the wind thusly having sails, but they had electricity for the use in 2way radios and gps. I have the link to the pictures. If the link will work here I don't really know, but it was a race they were in and the boat was called the Foolish Muse.
