Danville (VT) Voters Authorize Use Of $1.2M For Biomass Heating Plant

Voters agreed by paper ballot to authorize the Danville School Board to draw up plans for a biomass heating system for the school not to exceed $1.2 million.

Eighty-seven people signed in to vote, and 85 ballots were cast, 70 in favor and 15 against. The strong majority emerged in spite of several people who spoke out against the project during the discussion session, citing numerous concerns.

School Director Keith Gadapee said many of the concerns brought up were discussed and addressed at the informational meetings held prior to the vote -- meetings that had poor attendance. Nevertheless, Gadapee answered questions as best he could, but stressed that the purpose of the vote was only to authorize the school board to come up with a plan for the school. He said it would not seal a deal with any contractors or engineers and would not lock the town into paying $1.2 million.

"Tonight is about getting approval to go forward," he said, to get permission to use up to $1.2 million to get a biomass fuel system for the school. The board may not use all of the money, he added, but would certainly not go over that amount without voter approval.
