Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, which cause global warming, are currently increasing four times faster than they were in the 1990s, scientists at the Beijing Conference on Global Environment Change warned Sunday.
Scientists from the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP) at the four-day Beijing conference urged "immediate, collaborative actions by governments" to "ensure sustainable development in the face of unprecedented global environmental change."
The ESSP, which organized the conference attended by over 1,000 international scientists, is a joint initiative of global environmental research programmes set up in 2001.
Despite efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the global growth rate in carbon dioxide between 2000 and 2005 was 3.2 per cent, compared to 0.8 per cent between 1990 to 1999, reported Mike Raupach, Chairman of the ESSP's Global Carbon Project.
