Las Vegas Water Plan Prompts County Recall Drive - LV Sun
ELY, Nev. (AP) - Opponents of a plan to pipe groundwater from rural White Pine County to Las Vegas have launched a recall drive against two county commissioners and the district attorney.

Jo Anne Garrett, who heads the recall effort with two other county residents, said Commissioners David Provost and Jack Norcross and District Attorney Richard Sears are too eager to negotiate with the Southern Nevada Water Authority to end a 15-year fight over groundwater rights. Petitioners began collecting signatures after filing documents to begin the drive on April 2.

EDIT

Sears said the issue has split White Pine County's 9,000 residents into two camps. One wants to fight, and the other thinks the cash-poor county should make a deal.

Last week, White Pine County officials cut more than $1 million from a county general fund budget of slightly more than $7 million. The recall petitioners favor fighting. But Sears said ignoring the water authority will lead to water being pumped from White Pine County with no benefit to the county."
