Oh boy.
AUSTIN – State hearing judges cleared the way Thursday for fast-track consideration of six proposed TXU coal-burning plants, but they also gave a clean-air coalition spearheaded by Dallas Mayor Laura Miller permission to participate in upcoming state hearings.
Environmental groups raised several procedural questions in an attempt to slow the permitting process, which has been accelerated by Gov. Rick Perry's order. But administrative law Judges Kerry Sullivan and Henry Card overrode the issues and set a hearing beginning Feb. 21 on whether to issue the permits. Six plants in Central and East Texas are the first of 11 coal-fired power plants planned by TXU.
In April, TXU said it would spend $10 billion to build the plants and cut total emissions by 20 percent from current levels. But so far, TXU has given few details about how or where it would cut emissions.
TXU spokeswoman Kim Morgan said the judges' ruling underscores the need to prepare for future electrical demands.
