Australian fires threatening ski resorts
I plucked this off of an antipodal message board.

Wed Dec 20, 2006 2:05 am (PST)

Well, 3 of Australia's major ski resorts face destruction from wildfire
over the next 36 hours. Mt Buller is virtually ringed by fire, Falls Creek
(home of the Australian Loppet) has had a number of spot fires over the
last 2 or 3 days, and Mt Hotham could also be destroyed given the weather
conditions expected over the next 36 hours. A spot fire at Falls Creek was clearly visible on their car park web cam 24 hours ago. http://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/hotham5.html

The 3 resorts are at the top of http://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/vic.html
If you look at the pictures, you can clearly see preparations for the
fires - snow making guns strategically positioned to protect runs and
buildings, fire hoses laid out etc. And the smoke is reducing visibility
considerably. Then there is the grey look of the earth - ash on the ground.
Wish us luck, and check the cams to see the progress of these fires.
