Carcieri looking again at R.I. joining greenhouse gas initiative

December 24, 2006

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Gov. Don Carcieri's staff again is looking
at whether Rhode Island should join other Northeastern states
in an initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10
percent by 2020.

Seven regional states are part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas
Initiative, which gives businesses financial incentives to
adopt policies that reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Carcieri has opposed joining the initiative in the past, citing
its possible costs.

"The governor has asked for an update in the last several weeks
from his staff and we are hoping it provides some information
to address his concerns," Carcieri spokesman Jeff Neal told The
Providence Journal. "When we decided not to join at that time,
that was not intended to be a final decision. As we have more
information, it would inform the way we proceed."
