Fuel Scarcity Intensifies In Nigeria - AllAfrica.com
Acute scarcity of petroleum products that set in with the yuletide bit harder yesterday as more demand rose against decreasing number of fuel service stations open to customers. Meanwhile, more street hawkers trooped to the roads with the scarce products especially fuel but sold at cut throat prices to desperate motorists.

But Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the official market supplier, yesterday responded to public outcry against the scarcity, promising to supply more products tro the market immediately.

The acute fuel shortages killed the joy of Christmas for some Nigerians as more retail outlets closed to customers and more travellers could not home travel to reunite with kinsmen. Consequently, transport fares on both inter city and interstate routes more than doubted as bus operators factored "black market" fuel prices into costs.

In Lagos, fares from Mile 2 to Oshodi that normally range between N30 and N40 jumped to between N80 and N100 per passenger. Inter city taxi charges rose from an average of N500 to over N3000. At major terminals in Lagos, desperate travellers were made to empty their pockets very painfully. Journeys to the Eastern and Northern parts of the country cost between N3000 and N6000 per passenger.

1. Whoops, no trains or trolleys.
Now that was a mistake. In India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan they are still using rail lines installed by the Raj and the original engines and passenger cars. When you factor in the extremely long life of the rolling stock passenger rail systems are by far the most energy efficient means of moving your populace around.

Of course corrupt Nigeria used the western example and relies almost entirely on cars, buses and trucks to move people around. All fueled by expensive petroleum that the government would rather sell overseas than supply to it's people at cut rates.

Bad Choice.

4. There are people who can buy grain or fuel.....
to cook it with but not both. This dilemma will become the source of a huge amount of instability in the world. As the price of fuel goes up the price of grain goes up; for people who can barely afford to eat now this is a disaster.

5. Yep. 'Rationing By Price' In Action
But because SUV go-juice is still 'plentiful' and affordable here, there is no evidence of a looming crises.

Yet, one wonders what happens when a country that imports 65% of it's petroleum, is absolutely dependant on said petroleum due to 70+ years of development, no longer can import a substantial portion of this quantity due to collapse of its currency.

Yes, one wonders . . .
