Kerry Push, Unlike Gore's, Will Attack on Environment
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 07:31 AM by NNadir
WASHINGTON, April 19 — In a departure from the way the 2000 presidential campaign unfolded, aides and advisers to Senator John Kerry say they intend to make the environment a central issue in this year's election.

In the 2000 race, Vice President Al Gore, who had dedicated much of his political career to environmental issues, did not make them a priority.

Democrats say it was hard back then to portray George W. Bush as bad for the environment, because it was not a major issue in Texas, where he was governor. Moreover, they say, Mr. Gore did not want to highlight the issue because Mr. Bush was depicting him as an environmental extremist for his book, "Earth in the Balance," and for saying that he hoped new technologies could replace the internal combustion engine. It was, after all, Mr. Bush's father who referred to Mr. Gore as Ozone Man...

1. Molly Ivins would disagree
According to Ivins, Bush had established plenty of record as being anti-environment.

This is just one of those issues where the press completely dropped the ball. Anybody who scratched the surface of Bush could have easily put the lie to his hollow "compassionate conservative" branding strategy.

But instead, they chose to focus on Gore's wardrobe and mannerisms. I wonder if they all secretly realize how badly they are doing their jobs.

2. I have to hope you're joking
Yes, I think they realize how badly they do their jobs, and I think they realize that their fat paychecks depend on the continuance of such direliction of duty.

This however is 2004. The Bush environmental policy is stark now, although, to read the work of the moron liar David Brooks in today's NY Times, the absurd spin is on.

I just remember reading during the 2000 election a lengthy article or two on his horrible Environmental track record. If only I could remember that source.
