Kerry Says His 'Family' Owns SUV, Not He
Kerry, Supporter of Higher Fuel Economy Stadnards Denies Owning an SUV, Saying 'Family' Owns It The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH April 22 — Does John Kerry, who supports higher automobile fuel economy standards, own a gas-guzzling SUV? There is one in the family, but Kerry said it's not his.

During a conference call Thursday with reporters to discuss his upcoming jobs tour through West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, the Democratic presidential candidate was asked whether he owned a Chevrolet Suburban.<snip>

Kerry said it's important for his family to buy American cars and pledged to keep car manufacturing jobs in the country if elected. He said he is interested in a hybrid car, and has talked to Ford about making it the "campaign car."

"We're going to keep jobs in America and help the industry be more competitive with foreign manufacturers that are building those cars today," Kerry said.<snip>

1. Hilarious
The RW will make hay of this, ignoring that Bush* based an entire presidency on consumption and manipulation of worldwide oil stocks.

2. This is just getting ridiculous
These wingnuts will just stop at nothing to try and embarrass Kerry, since they can't seem to debate him on real issues. Who cares what he drives, I certainly don't. At least he never drove drunk or has a wife that committed vehicular manslaughter - neither of which was ever prosecuted. If they want to talk about personal issues, then let's get personal, shall we???

This is just moronic and one can only hope that the sheeple will see through these efforts to distract from what is truly important.

JMHO, of course.

3. Alright, that's enough! This is the same crap that they pulled with Gore
in 2000. Instead of attacking his policies, (because they were far more popular than Bushlers) they "nitpick" our candidate apart.
First, it was Kerry's Hair, then it was "was John Kerry's Purple Heart rightfully earned?", and now it's his wife owns an SUV!

It's the same crap again.

4. .
If there is nothing Americans have to worry about except the car that Kerry drives, they have to live an adorable good life.

5. Since Kerry seems to be for
fuel conservation. I am disturbed that Kerry owns an SUV, Gulfstream G5, a 100+ yacht and 5 homes. He burns more fuel in a week than I will burn all year. I will grudgingly vote for him but I will be holding my nose.

6. I agree
I am sick and tired of people getting upset at me and other individuals that would like left leaders to practice what they preach.

WTF does his wife need an SUV for anyway? Does she haul around fire wood or something? If Kerry wants to push for fuel efficiency (and I want him to) he better make sure his family practices it too.

9. I agree also
As a presidential candidate, he needs to practice what he preaches. If you want to be seen as an environmental president, you can't be the poster boy for conspicuous over consumption and gross excesses that harm the environment.

I mean seriously, just how much energy are his five homes using? How much pollution is his yacht putting in the water? It's a little disingenuous to be running as an environmentalist when you're personally doing about 10 or 20 times your fair share of polluting the environment.

7. It's not inappropriate to have a pickup or SUV at a mountain home
it's not for city traffic or commuting, that's where using an SUV makes no sense.

8. Come on, John.... just be honest with us...
... all he has to do is say, Yes, we have a Chevy Suburban that we leave parked most of the time in Sun Valley. And you'll notice it is an AMERICAN SUV, folks. But when I get into office and I am going to do everything in my power to get Detroit to make SUVs safer and more fuel efficient. I've also talked to my wife about trading in the Suburban in for a Ford Escape Hybrid when it becomes available later this year. We are going to lead by example.

Now... would all those throwing stones at my wife's car, please look in your garage and tell me how many of you are driving a hybrid Honda or Toyota? And before you cast any more stones, how many of you own SUVs?

Nuff said....

BTW... I drive a 60mpg Honda Insight and my wife drives an 30 mpg Accord.

10. Disappointing, yes, but some perspective would be nice here

Let's see - John Kerry's SUV on one hand, Dick Cheney's pronouncement that energy conservation may be a "personal virtue", but essentially has no place in a national energy plan on the other. Advantage - Kerry.

John Kerry's SUV vs. Bush's refusal to even try and raise fuel efficiency standards beyond the pathetic 1.5 MPG mandated so far for SUVs and light trucks. Advantage - Kerry.

John Kerry's SUV vs. Bush's hydrogen hype, which abandons any mandates or improvements in fuel efficiency during the 15-20 year period required for hydrogen vehicles to reach the highways, setting aside the net negative energy balance such vehicles would be subject to. Advantage - Kerry.

John Kerry's SUV vs. Bush's opening of public lands to heavily subsidized oil, gas, coal & nuclear development. Advantage - Kerry.

John Kerry's SUV vs. Bush's withdrawal from Kyoto, abandonment of the Aarhus Convention on toxics, pressure for increased production of methyl bromide (a known ozone-destroying chemical), "Healthy Forests", "Clear Skies", and the whole kit and kaboodle of "sound science"-based decisions on climate, energy, water, air and wildlands. Advantage - Kerry.

John Kerry's lifetime 96 rating from LCV vs. Bush's grade of "F". Advantage - Kerry.

Yes, it sucks, and yes the "It's my family's SUV" answer is pretty much the environmental equivalent of "not inhaling". But on balance, there's no question on who's record on environmental issues from A to Z is better.

We don't need a candidate or a president who is perfect on environmental issues. We just need someone who is substantially better than Bush, and there's no doubt that Kerry is light-years ahead of Bush in this area.
