Cape Town - Concern mounted on Tuesday over a possible environmental hazard off the Cape coast after a Taiwanese cargo ship issued a distress call following the discovery of a large hole in its hull.
Cape Africa, a 150 000 ton ship, which is about 370 nautical miles west of Cape Town, contacted authorities on Monday after discovering the problem in a forward hold.
According to Bill Dernier, from the South African Maritime Safety Authority, the tugboat Smith Amandla - formerly known as the John Ross - was sent to the bulk carrier on Monday. It reached the stricken vessel at 01:00 on Tuesday.
