Gore, whose 2006 film "An Inconvenient Truth" brought national attention to the global warming issue, said the sight of thousands of engineers addressing climate change would alter the way the profession appeals to young people around the country.
"When we undertake that challenge, you will find young people flowing into engineering," he said during an address at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose. "They are desperate to find something larger than themselves" to work on, he said.
Gore took the occasion of the technical conference to warn that the nation must redesign the electrical devices and energy systems it produces to be more energy efficient. There are some scientists who claim the world has as little as 10 years to make major changes before the accumulation of greenhouse gases may be difficult to reverse, he said.
