help save the Endangered Species Act before May 7
Please call or write your congressman to help save the Endangered Species Act- yet another thing that the Bush Administration wants to ruin.

Save the Endangered Species Act!

Can you imagine a world without grizzlies, bald eagles, Florida panthers, sea otters, and American alligators?

Urge your Representative to sign on to an important letter to save the Endangered Species Act...and the wildlife it protects!

Help me spread the word. Forward this message on to your friends, family and others in your area who care about protecting wildlife.

For more than 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has stood between magnificent creatures and extinction. But over the last several weeks, the Bush/Cheney Administration has been working secretly to weaken the strongest environmental protection we have for our wildlife.

Urge your Representative to sign on to an important letter to safeguard this landmark Act -- and the wolves, bald eagles, and other wildlife it protects!

Draft documents recently leaked from within the administration indicate that officials are considering making sweeping changes to the Endangered Species Act that would dramatically undercut protection for endangered and threatened species -- and many of them are just as bad as those that would have been made in the Pombo “Wildlife Extinction Bill” that Defenders supporters like you helped stop in the last Congress.

The new rules would...

Make it significantly harder to add at-risk wildlife to the Endangered Species List;
Eliminate or significantly undermine the goal of recovering species that are already on the list;
Lessen oversight of federal agency actions and cut out the experts at wildlife agencies from their role in enforcing the law;
Weaken the law's emphasis on habitat protection; and
Give individual states the power to veto plans to recover or reintroduce species to their historic range.
If these policies had been in place before, grizzly bears, bald eagles, and many other species might never have been protected under the Endangered Species Act -- and may have already disappeared. Gray wolves might never have been returned to Yellowstone, and we may have never restored a true symbol of the American West.

Fortunately, we have some brave members in Congress who support the Endangered Species Act and are coming to its defense. Representatives Hinchey (D-NY), Shays (R-CT) and Moran (D-VA) are circulating a letter opposing these proposed changes -- or any future plans to weaken the Endangered Species Act's protections for our wildlife.

Please urge your Representative to sign on to the Hinchey-Moran-Shays letter to defend the Endangered Species Act and the wildlife this landmark Act protects. The deadline to sign the letter is May 7th, so please act now!!

You and I both know that our wildlife needs the Endangered Species Act to survive. Now we can give the Endangered Species Act the help it so desperately needs.

Sincerely,

Rodger Schlickeisen
President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Help us spread the word about this important action. Forward this message to your friends, family and other wildlife lovers who might be interested in learning more about the Bush/Cheney Administration’s terrible new plan…
