L'ANSE, Mich. (AP) — Upper Peninsula Power Co. has sold the J.H. Warden Generating Station to L'Anse Warden Electric Co.

The new owners plan to convert the power plant, which has run on coal, oil and natural gas, to biomass.

"Since Upper Michigan has an abundance of waste wood, (and) needs green energy, we thought this was the correct time to put a plant like this into the green energy market," Mike Reid, chief operating officer of L'Anse Warden, told The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton for a Wednesday story.

White Pine's generating capacity is 60 megawatts. The biomass plant will add 20 megawatts of capacity.
