Experts say lifestyle changes key to fighting global warming

Fri May 4, 7:12 AM ET

BANGKOK (AFP) - Individuals have an important role to play in tackling
global warming, not just governments and industry, experts said here
Friday as they called for people to change their lifestyles.

Taking the train to work instead of driving, turning the temperature up
a degree or two on the office air conditioner and eating less meat are
just some of the options to consider in the fight against global warming,
they said.

Lifestyle change was one key issue highlighted in a landmark report
released here on Friday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change that looked at ways to save the world from the worst impacts
of global warming.

But the experts said lifestyle changes did not mean people in rich or
poor nations had to suffer or go without.

1. Lifestyle changes require attitude changes
Look at smoking or DWI in the U.S.

3. I'd gladly ride the train to work in this country
If we actually had them, that is. Driving is way overrated.

4. I'm walking the talk

We have clotheslines that we use instead of our clothes dryer (except on days when the weather doesn't permit).

We do solar cooking whenever possible, in a sturdy solar oven I built out of cardboard boxes and aluminum foil.

We sold our larger vehicle, a Ford van, last year.

If I so much as leave the room while I'm using my computer, I turn off the monitor until I get back. I also don't let it run 24/7 like many people do.

We draw our shades during the summer months, to reduce cooling costs. (During the summer, we leave the A/C thermostat set at 81 or 82 degrees.)

What blows my mind is how Al Gore doesn't talk about half these measures, which could really help reduce energy consumption. There's a lot more to life than fluorescent light bulbs....
