May 16 (Bloomberg) -- Tony Blair, paying his final visit to Washington as U.K. prime minister today, will urge action from President George W. Bush on climate change and Africa.
Blair has spent most of his time in office pushing for rich countries to help Africa and tackle global warming, which scientists say is caused by burning fossil fuels. As he prepares for retirement, he wants commitments on both issues at next month's Group of Eight summit in Germany. What you need is international consensus on the way forward,'' Tom Kelly, Blair's spokesman, told journalists in London ahead of the trip. ``That's what we're aiming for.''
Blair's closeness to Bush and particularly his support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq have damaged him at home and undermined his ambition to serve a full third term. In an interview with MSNBC last night, Blair said he didn't regret his Iraq decisions. ``I would make the same decision,'' Blair said, according to a transcript of the interview. ``I've never made any secret, in fact, that this wasn't an act for me of simply, `well, America wants it; that's what we've got to do.'''
Movement on climate change from Bush, who in 2001 rejected the Kyoto treaty to control emissions, might help Blair to argue that his support for the U.S. president had paid dividends. Blair retires on June 27. EDIT
