Up To 2,000 Indonesian Islands May Have Disappeared Below Rising Seas By 2030
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Around 2000 islands in Indonesia may have disappeared by 2030 following an expected rise in the sea level, Yogyakarta Meteorology and Geophysics Office (BMG) chief Jaya Murjaya said here on Wednesday.

"Up to 2030, the sea level will rise by eight to 29 centimeters and engulf around 2,000 islands in Indonesia," Jaya Murjaya said in a National Geographic Seminar at the Yogyakarta State University (UNY).

He said the disappearance of the islands and the rise in the sea level would also reduce the width of Indonesia`s land territory.

Jaya Murjaya said the accumulation of global warming in the athmosphere and the thinning of the ozone layer would contribute to the rise in temperature on the earth`s surface.

1. If that's the case...
... we'll have so many problems of our own here in the United States that we'll hardly notice what's going on in Indonesia.

Our coastal barrier islands can't be expected to stay put as sea levels rise. They'll move away from the structures built upon them.

2. In other news:
Cartographers expect a 73% decrease in incidence of carpal tunnel due to not having to draw all those pesky islands. :silly:

3. But ...
... the cost of blue ink is expected to rise due to increased demand!

(Thanks for making me laugh! :toast: )
