Tropical Storm Barry threatens Florida

MIAMI, June 1 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Barry formed
in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, the first day of the
Atlantic hurricane season, and storm warnings were
issued for parts of Florida's west coast.

At 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) the storm was centered
about 320 miles (520 km) west of Key West, Florida,
and moving north, forecasters at the National Hurricane
Center said. It had top sustained winds of 45 mph
(75 kph) and was not expected to strengthen
significantly before hitting the Florida Coast, the
forecasters said.

3. Unfortunately, it looks like Barry will miss Okeechobee...

passing it to the northwest and hitting the Tallahassee area.

On the plus side, that means those of us here in Southeast Florida have dodged our first bullet! :)

6. Drought in Tallahassee

My sister tells me that Tallahassee is suffering its worst drought since 1883, so this isn't a bad thing.

8. No rain for last 3 months, but it rained some today.

Water table is really down. More is needed to do something about that,
but this should help control the fires. Smoke around everywhere for the last 2 or 3 weeks.
And it may rain again tomorrow.
Maybe the pattern is finally changing.

But the hurricane forecasters don't think any hurricanes will hit Florida this year.
All expected to go north out to sea like last year.

The hurricane season of 2007 officially began today, and we officially have our second surprising named storm of the season--Tropical Storm Barry. Barry is highly unusual in that it developed in the presence of strong wind shear--about 20-40 knots. I've never seen a tropical storm form under more than about 25 knots of wind shear.
