U.S. adopts limits on clean water law enforcement
By Lisa Lambert Jun 5, 2007, 21:00 GMT

WASHINGTON - The landmark U.S. law to fight water pollution will now apply only to bodies of water large enough for boats to use, and their adjacent wetlands, and will not automatically protect streams, the U.S. government said on Tuesday.

Environmental groups said they fear the new policy will muddy the purpose of the federal Clean Water Act and put many smaller bodies of water at risk. Democrats in Congress have introduced legislation mandating protection of creeks, estuaries and other watersheds.

The Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers wrote the new guidelines after the Supreme Court split a year ago in a case about which waters fall under the Clean Water Act.

Because of the split decision, lower courts must decide on a case-by-case basis if the law applies to smaller water areas.

1. As the fish die, we will die
We owe so much more to our kids and grandkids.

Get those conservative judges in who are totally in it for greed now and let our kids die.

I can't see how anyone can vote GOP. May they rot in hell.

2. I bet the mountain top removal coal companies are behind this one too.
The ignorance of people who vote GOP is truly tragic. I try not to hate them. I don't always succeed.

3. Where do the streams end up? Larger bodies of water. Pollute the streams, and
you pollute the lakes, the oceans... Life in Bushworld. Reality has been rendered "quaint."

4. Completely contempuous of what the people want
over and over again the EPA has been criticized for not doing enough to protect the ecology and the people. They were recently ordered by the courts to do their job in regards to greenhouse grasses. And here again they try to limit what they do.

Just unbelievable.

6. The business community is absolutely relentless
Environmentalists never "win". All our victories are temporary, our defeats permanent. A favorable law or court ruling is always challenged. Circumstances change. Population pressures increase and we continue to fall back. They want it all, at the lowest possible cost, with no accountability and no responsibility for the damage done. Shameful.

5. Great ... so if you want to pollute a stretch of water ...
... you just have to make it un-navigable first!

Piece of piss! Get silting up the mouth of the stream boys!
