EDMONTON - A new, zero-emissions power plant could be up and running west of Edmonton in 10 to 12 years, Epcor Utilities Inc. president Don Lowry predicted Wednesday.

But the price tag on the clean-coal project is $1.5 billion to $2 billion and electricity bills will have to rise to cover the costs, Lowry told The Journal's editorial board.

No government investment is sought except for provincial and federal contributions of $10 million each to a $30-million technical study underway at the Genesee power station about 75 kilometres west of Edmonton, Lowry said.

The proposed zero-emissions plant includes a "gasifier" to extract clean fuel from coal, plus systems for capturing carbon-dioxide exhaust, then "sequestering" or injecting the greenhouse gas into permanent underground storage. A new pipeline could deliver the carbon-dioxide about 75 kilometres from Genesee to oilfields for injections to prolong the life of aging wells, Lowry said.

1. Injecting CO2 under the ground doesn't remove it from the atmosphere.

It just sweeps it under the rug.

Maybe they could run it through my Drager gas anesthesia machine where the CO2 absorber will soak it up and chemically remove it from the atmosphere.

They are selling this technology as a way to reduce CO2 emissions
but actually using it to increase them.

Even ignoring the safety, groundwater, whatever factors that should rule
out any of these bogus schemes, consider the density of the carbon being
"sequestered" compared to the density of the carbon being "recovered".

Yet another commercial scheme based on lies but painted green to sell it
to the public (and get funding from the government).
