Milosevic allies guilty of killing rival

Slobodan Milosevic's paramilitary commander, his secret police chief
and five other hitmen were today convicted and sentenced for the
killing of a former Serbian president.

Ivan Stambolic, a political enemy of Mr Milosevic, disappeared while
jogging in Belgrade in 2000. The discovery of his body just under
three years later revealed he died in an execution-style killing
with a shot to the back of the head.

The special court in Belgrade sentenced the former paramilitary
commander Milorad Lukovic to the maximum 40 years in prison and the
Milosevic-era secret service chief Rade Markovic to 15 years for the
murder.

Lukovic was also jailed for a failed attempt to assassinate Vuk
Draskovic, now Serbia's foreign minister, when he was an opposition
leader.
