Hopes fade for 102 trapped in flooded China mine

BEIJING (Reuters) - Waters are rising in a flooded Chinese coal mine
where the chances of finding 102 trapped miners alive are slim, Xinhua
news agency said on Monday of the latest in a grim series of colliery
disasters.

Sunday's accident happened at the Daxing mine in Xingning in the
southern province of Guangdong when 106 miners were working underground,
the second such flooding in the area in less than a month.

Three workers escaped and one was washed out of the mine alive, the
agency said.

"There are 15 million to 20 million cubic meters of water under the mine
and the water level is still rising 50 cm (20 inches) an hour," Xinhua
quoted a vice mayor of the nearby city of Meizhou as saying.

"The chances of the trapped workers surviving are relatively small."
