Nurses go on strike in Angolan capital
Nurses in public hospitals in Luanda went on strike on Thursday to press for a pay rise and payment of arrears, a union spokesperson said.

Most hospitals were full of sick people waiting in vain for treatment, an AFP reporter saw. Only two or three nurses were on duty to deal with emergencies.

"Usually there are lots of nurses. It's an ordeal waiting for hours and hours," one patient, Gomes Kulu, himself ill and with a sick daughter, complained to reporters.

"We chose to go on strike because our patience is at an end," Joao Ngola, secretary general of the nurses' union in Luanda, said.

A nurse earns on average less than $50 (almost R400) a month
