Coast guard traps 20 Chinese women - Taiwan
AP
Saturday, Sep 20, 2003,Page 2

In an escalating battle with human smugglers, the coast guard has arrested a fishing boat captain and 20 suspected prostitutes from China who tried to illegally immigrate to the nation on the boat, officials said.

The women braved the voyage across the Taiwan Strait even after human smugglers, or "snakeheads," allegedly forced 20 women to jump into the sea last month while being chased by the coast guard. Six of the women drowned.

When asked if she was worried about being dumped into the water, one of the 20 women arrested Thursday night told a local TV cable news channel, "If I die, I'll just die. All my problems will be solved."

There's a little more going on behind the scenes here. There's a critical shortage of Taiwanese women who will 'touch' a Taiwanese man. Taiwanese men are quite (double) chauvinistic. The women of Taiwan are in abundance but want nothing to do with Taiwanese men. In fact Taiwanese men are the largest mail-order-bride customers in the Asian region. Importing bribes from Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, and China. (I posted a factual news report on this about a month ago here.)

1. Doesn't surprise me.
I met a 25 year old business guy whose dad opened a factory in China at our bar in China in August. He was with his Chinese girlfriend. He was the most arrogant guy I've ever met...incredibly chauvinistic. He was extremely insulting of China, in general and he had an extremely nationalistic perspective of the world. Taiwan uberalles. Because I was an American, he assumed that I shared his worldview. If he's typical of the male in Taiwan, it's no wonder they need Chinese girlfriends...

The men from China are about the same if not more. I would say it's quite bad for women in all of Asia, except HK where the women lead the boys around on dog leashes. India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, even Japan to some extent women are slaves. In Taiwan, a woman has no rights in a divorce. Cannot get the children under any circumstance unless the male signs off the rights. Even a few years ago I think the children where given to the father's father in case of death of the father. (I'm not quite sure on that, I'm ask some friends.)

(There much more in Asia than meets the eye or you hear on CNN. Even if these countries have some laws protecting women rights, (but most don't), the women can't file any charges. I mean the local police or court would just slap the women and tell them to get out of the building and go home. They wouldn't allow you to file any type of papers.) (I would guess Africa and South America are the same.)

Visit the world and see for yourself.

(To be clear, Taiwan does NOT refuse people from filing charges now. President Chun, (spelled Chen), has completely changed this since he first became Taibei Mayor then President. But before Chun the police and courts wouldn't accept 90% of what the citizens brought to them. You had to be connected, 'Guan She', to file paperwork, (In all levels of government).

3. No doubt that Taiwan,China, and HK are patriachal in their
social/political attitudes. I do spend some time in China around Guangdong Province primarily. Our base of operations is Zhongshan and we have a bar (not karyoke) there. So I think I've got a perspective on the culture.

I've been to Taiwan a few times, but, frankly, I've met a lot of cocky and arrogant Taiwanese...far more so then in HK or the mainland. They seem to have a real macho culture in Taiwan and their "socials" always turn into quite the drunkfests..I can't tell you how many times I get challenged to "Kampai"(sp). Reminds me of my college days...and these are grown men.

From a legal perspective, Japanese women have as many rights as their American and European counterparts.
