Conference voices fear of `evil empire' - COMMUNIST THREAT - TW

"For China is an evil empire that deprives its 1.2 billion people of the right to make their own choice."

Cao Chang-ching, a New York-based political commentator and a former editor of a Chinese Community Party newspaper
The most urgent issue facing Taiwan's public is the need to recognize the threat from China, local and international experts attending a conference on cross-strait issues said yesterday.

"It is rather contradictory that Taiwan, in view of China's incessant and increasing threats, continues to relax regulations governing cross-strait exchanges," said Taiwan Advocates vice chairman Huang Kun-hui (黃昆輝).

Huang was briefing panelists on the conclusions of the two-day conference which ended yesterday.

1. Taiwan needs to forge a national identity?
I never met a more nationalistic society. I don't know how they could possess a greater sense of identity then they have now.

China is a threat, most definitely, but not a direct military one, I think. More the fear of becoming assimilated/absorbed by the sheer size of the PRC's economy.

Taiwan never comes up in conversations I have with people in China...but almost every Taiwanese person I've met seems to have a deep distrust/dislike for China (although they don't seem to have a problem with the low cost labor or selling into this market).
