Where rape is a weapon - Congo
After raping teenaged Marie, three uniformed soldiers left her in a forest in Democratic Republic of Congo's South Kivu province, where sexual violence is widespread.

"With the war, it was impossible to get to a hospital," recalled the 17-year-old, between sobs brought on by the memory.

Once clashes in South Kivu had died down three months after the attack, Marie was able to seek treatment in the province's major town of Bukavu, where she shortly afterwards had a miscarriage.

"Women and children are increasingly the targets of attacks by militia. Sexual violence against them continues on a large scale and has reached a very alarming level," Iulia Motoc, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for DRC, said in a statement released in Geneva last week.

1. Unbelievable.
I read an article about that recently that absolutely floored me. It told about all the women who had to travel to hospitals for surgical reconstructions. I would think there would be a lot of mental problems in a society that has endured such horrors. Then again, there are plenty of mental problems among the world's most protected people, Americans.

Regarding George Bush's commitment to Africa, I recall one special moment during the speech in which he announced he was going to donate millions of dollars to fight AIDS. As he made his announcement, the camera focused on a black man - probably the only black in the audience. To my amazement, the camera remained GLUED to this individual, who was grinning from ear to ear, as Bush discussed his AIDS campaign. It was one of the most transparent propaganda routines I've ever seen.

And why is Bill Gates interested in fighting AIDS in Africa? He obviously doesn't give a damn about the people. Is it part of his quest to prevent third world nations from adoping Linux?
