The Asahi Shimbun: Japan orders ground troops to Iraq
It's official: Ishiba orders ground troops to Iraq

The advance unit will consist of the first armed SDF members sent to an overseas combat zone.

With an emphasis on safety, Defense Agency chief Shigeru Ishiba gave the dispatch order Friday for ground troops to Iraq, a nation where even combat-tested militaries are taking mounting casualties.

An advance unit of about 30 Ground Self-Defense Force members was ordered to fly to the Middle East around Friday to prepare for the eventual dispatch of about 500 members of the main GSDF contingent.

The GSDF dispatch will be the first to a nation that is still in a virtual state of war.
