Pending Regime Change in Iran
Pending Regime Change in Iran
Commentary > The Monitor's View
from the January 13, 2004 edition

As much as American conservatives want the US to push for a regime change in Iran, they should relax. Political turmoil in Tehran is heading that way anyway.

In Iran's awkward mix of democracy and theocracy, the Muslim clerics on the powerful Council of Guardians overplayed their hand this week in a losing battle with elected reformers. The council barred one-third of the current members of parliament from running in the Feb. 20 elections and eliminated more than half of the candidates registered to run.

This was a desperate act, and a clear sign that the self-appointed heirs to the 1979 Islamic Revolution are willing to risk a popular revolt over their clumsy power play.

2. .
Maybe Iranians need what they had in 1953 a democratically elected Secular Nationalist government.

You know one where the people loves the government, but it doesn't include religion? That's what they strongly supported, and then it was overthrown by the MI6 and CIA to implement the Shah then came the 1979 revolution and little did Iranians know but the regime to replace the Shah was even more brutal..

This time i'm hoping for what was voted for in 53 and would be voted for in every free election.

No outside interfence.

3. I agree
Iran is well on its way to becoming a democracy, its only a matter of time. The students there are making a huge difference. The US would do well however to stop calling Iran evil. Iranians are just as patriotic as anyone. How would we react (Hell, how DO we react to Islamic extremists) to someone who says we are evil?
