Fire leaves 20 000 homeless - Uganda

Kampala - A fire has destroyed much of a displaced people's camp in northern Uganda, leaving more than 20 000 people homeless, said the army's Lieutenant Paddyu Ankunda on Tuesday.

"The fire started at dawn on Sunday from one part of the camp, spread quickly and has since destroyed more than 4 000 huts, leaving more than 20 000 people without shelter at Pabbo displaced people's camp," said Ankunda from the northern regional capital, Gulu.

He said the army and police were trying to put out the fire, but it intermittently re-ignited because it was the dry season and fire spread easily.
