2. I know little of Indian politics

Is my understanding correct? That the Hindu Nationalist BJP is just part of the RSS? If so, what does the RSS do other than run the Indian government?

stands for Rashtriya Swayam-Sevak Sangh (http://www.rss.org/New_RSS/index.jsp)

RSS is the base of BJP (the majority party in the ruling coalition)...it is sort of like the Christian Coalition of India.
