Shanghai seeks to boost power supply with new generators
AP , SHANGHAI
Thursday, Apr 22, 2004,Page 12

Shanghai plans to spend more than 100 billion yuan (US$12 billion) on doubling its electricity generating capacity by 2010, to alleviate shortages that are slowing production and prompting complaints from foreign investors.

"Plans for power development have been upgraded to meet growing demand for electricity and sustain the city's rapid development," city government spokeswoman Jiao Yang said in remarks on the city's Web site yesterday.

Foreign businesses have been complaining about power shortages that have obliged some to temporarily suspend production or shift factory schedules. Last week, foreign executives attending a conference told top city officials that Shanghai might lose foreign investment -- a key engine of economic growth -- if the problem is not alleviated.
