Protests were `unsuccessful coup': Chen
By Jimmy Chuang
STAFF REPORTER
Monday, Apr 26, 2004,Page 1

President Chen Shui-bian (???) yesterday said that the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT)-People First Party (PFP) alliance's protests in front of the Presidential Office from March 20 to March 27 were an "unsuccessful coup d'etat."

"Thank God it was not successful. Otherwise, I would not have had the opportunity to stand up here and speak with all of you and celebrate your school's anniversary. It is our fate," Chen said.

Chen made his remarks while he was attending the anniversary ceremony of the National Chiayi Senior High School yesterday morning. He said that Taiwan is blessed because both the assassination attempt on the lives of Vice President Annette Lu (???) and himself, and the "seven-day coup d'etat," were unsuccessful. Moreover, Lu and he also won re-election.

Chen encouraged the students at the celebration to work hard, study hard and play hard. He called the high school a "premiers' alma mater" because former premiers Vincent Siew (???) and Chang Chun-hsiung (???) are both alumni.

That's what I believe too. But Chen left out KMT fascist forces in the Chinese media in America was a participant as well as Jackie 'Whore' Chan was.

1. Pan-blue efforts deserve coup label
Tuesday, Apr 27, 2004,Page 8

As the pan-blue camp represented by Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (???) said yesterday, "coup d'etat" is not a facile one-liner to be used at will.

Over the weekend, both President Chen Shui-bian (???) and former president Lee Teng-hui (???) had coincidentally applied the terms "coup" and "unsuccessful coup" to describe the mass protests spearheaded by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP) in front of the Presidential Office starting on March 20.

The question we need to ask, however, is how the blue camp's and protesters' behavior has shaped the viewpoints of most Taiwanese people and the global media.

During the week of protests, pan-blue presidential candidate and KMT chairman Lien Chan (??) told a seething crowd that Chen's victory amounted to "stealing the nation." His wife, Lien Fang Yu (???), also visited the fuming mob to demand a new election.

2. Minister not at `secret meeting'
By Brian Hsu
STAFF REPORTER
Wednesday, Apr 28, 2004,Page 3

The Ministry of National Defense yesterday strongly denied that a secret meeting took place between Minister of National Defense Tang Yao-ming (???), former defense minister Chiang Chung-ling (???) and another retired general on the night of the presidential election.

Unconfirmed reports of a secret meeting aroused much speculation because Chiang and retired General Wang Wen-hsieh (???) are aligned with the pan-blue camp. Chiang is also a former vice chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), while Wang heads a department in the KMT handling veterans' affairs.
