Leave my child out of politics: Thaksin - Thailand
By Nirmal Ghosh

BANGKOK - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has lashed out at critics questioning the admission of his daughter Paetongtarn to the prestigious Chulalongkorn University, saying she should not be dragged into politics.

'Is she the child of a bandit to be despised so much?' he said. 'Why should she be treated as someone so objectionable? Don't drag a child into the political game.

'She is a daughter of the Prime Minister who works hard for this country. Fight with me man-to-man but leave my family and my children alone.'

Chulalongkorn University relaxed its criteria for admission just in time for Ms Paetongtarn, 17, to squeak through on Monday for a course on media management. But many other applicants, who felt they should have made the grade but failed to do so because of the altered weightage given to the set of admission criteria, expressed disappointment.

Coming on the heels of rumours of leaked university entrance examination question papers, from which Ms Paetongtarn may also have benefited, the incident has Chulalongkorn officials scrambling for explanations.

If a child robbed a bank they would be put in the legal system. If a child did something unethical to attain admissions it should also be put in the legal system.
