LRA Kill Over 100 Sudanese

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has massacred 122 Sudanese and displaced over 4,000 during raids on villages in southern Sudan, the Equatoria Defence Forces (EDF) has said.

The EDF, a militia group allied to the SPLA, said in a statement issued yesterday, the LRA raided villages at Gangala near the Government garrison position of Jebel Mille. The raids took place from June 25 to 27.

The EDF said the LRA, supported by the Sudan government army, also attacked Jebel Guttni and Kor Englizi, overrunning and burning villages and looting property.

1. Update: Kayihura Deployed in Sudan

President Yoweri Museveni has deployed Brig. Kale Kayihura to Juba in southern Sudan to coordinate with the Sudanese government in the offensive against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.

Kayihura was appointed on July 7 and the posting took immediate effect.

He is the UPDF's Chief Political Commissar. He was posted to the Sudan as Uganda's special military liaison officer in Juba, military sources told The Monitor during the weekend. Kayihura is also the Military Assistant to the President.

"We need close cooperation with the Arabs . Like now, Kony is in Nisitu. What is he doing there?" the Army Spokesman, Maj. Shaban Bantariza, said, referring to the importance of Kayihura's appointment.
