Spain, Algeria back Baker Plan for W.Sahara
MADRID - Spain and Algeria said on Tuesday they backed the Baker Plan on the future of the disputed Moroccan-occupied territory of Western Sahara following a meeting of their respective foreign ministers in Madrid.

"The desire of the Spanish government is to apply the Baker Plan, and for that we must make the necessary diplomatic efforts," Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos told a joint news conference with Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Beljadem.

---

Algiers and Rabat are in dispute over the status of the territory, which Morocco annexed completely after Spanish settlers left in 1975.

---

The independence movement in the former Spanish colony, the Polisario Front, favours Baker but Morocco is opposed over fears that its sovereignty, which it regards as "non-negotiable," would be placed at risk.
