Bogota - Leftist rebels ambushed a police convoy with automatic weapons in north-eastern Colombia, killing nine officers and wounding three, authorities said.

The officers were responding on Tuesday to a call from alleged villagers claiming to have spotted a group of suspicious armed men near Paimado, about 300km north-east of the capital, Bogota, when their vehicles came under a barrage of fire, a spokesperson at National Police headquarters said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Separately, suspected fighters of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the country's main Marxist rebel group known as the FARC, killed another policeman on Tuesday at a road block they set up along a southern highway.

The officer was shot dead as he drove on a motorbike toward the FARC checkpoint near the city of Ibague, 130km south of Bogota, the spokesperson said.
