Cop’s Bullet Killed Bystander In Shooting Outside Nightclub
Monday, September 15, 2003, 5:09 p.m.

(Chicago) -- Chicago police say the bullet that struck and killed an innocent bystander outside a night club in the River North neighborhood last Friday was fired by a Chicago police officer.

Forty-one-old Eric Jones of 10421 S. Peoria St. was killed during an exchange of gunfire between the off-duty police officer and alleged carjackers. Chicago police say the suspected carjackers could be charged with the murder of Jones because their actions led to his death even though the officer fired the fatal shot.

Two suspects were also shot and wounded during the exchange of gunfire. The shooting happened early Friday morning outside the Voyeur nightclub at 151 West Ohio Street.

The bullet that killed Jones was from the officer's 9mm revolver, Chicago police spokesman Pat Camden said Monday afternoon.

The officer shot and wounded two of the suspects as they tried to hijack his vehicle, outside the nightclub at 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to Camden. The driver of a sport-utility vehicle in which one of the wounded suspects rode to a hospital was also arrested, Acting Police Supt. Phil Cline said Friday.
