N.J. Lawmakers Press Pellet-Gun Bill
In early September, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg by police Capt. James Brady after the teenager refused to drop what appeared to be a real gun. The weapon was actually a toy "Air Soft" gun that shoots rubber pellets.

The legislation introduced by Assemblymen Gary Guear (D-Mercer) and Peter Barnes (D-Middlesex) would ban the sale or possession of any air, gas, or spring-powered gun that looks like a real gun.

In addition, the measure calls for penalties ranging from a $15,000 fine and five years in prison for selling such devices and a fine of up to $10,000 and 18 months in prison for possession.

Who did you kill,
Pellet-Gun Bill?

Hey, Pellet-Gun Bill,
Who did you kill,
Pellet-Gun Bill?

(Now, I have to go look up some words.)

He went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun.
In case of accidents he always took his mum.
He's the all-American bullet-headed saxon mother's son.

(All the children sing)

Hey Pellet-Gun Bill,
What did you kill Pellet-Gun Bill?
Hey Pellet-Gun Bill,
What did you kill Pellet-Gun Bill?

No adaptations required even.

I don't recognize yours. You wouldn't recognize mine if I sang it.

But this is jolly good fun, I must say. Between you and Spentastic (maybe they accidentally shot themselves, maybe they were reading it in wingdingese ...), it's been a gas, but speaking of which, I now have to go get that emissions test done and hope I don't get caught driving with expired plates on my way there.

oo, oo, don't want to omit this one though:

Deep in the jungle where the mighty tiger lies,
Bill and his elephants were taken by surprise.
So Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes.

Hey, Pellet-Gun Bill!
...

41. The Ballad of Pellet Gun Bill
There once was a man name of Pellet Gun Bill
If it were not for NJ Lawmakers he'd be with us still.
But to a sticky end young Billy did come
When he was pressed to give up his precious gun.

"From my cold dead hands" poor Billy did cry.
"O.K" said the sheriff and shot him in the eye
As into the dirt Billy's blood did run
The sheriff cooly blew the smoke from his gun

Now this might seem to be the story's end
But out from the shadows came the late pellet Billy's friend
He said to the cop "well Billy's up Boot hill"
"Cos, that what happens if you Press Pellet-Gun Bill"

I thank you

It’s called sarcasm, joking or injecting a little humor into a sad situation, and even though you know it, you still try to load your gun with it.

Your post was none of the above, and clearly demonstrates the callused attitude that causes so many Democrats to disassociate themselves from the “party image” that demonstrates it.

14. BANGS HEAD ON WALL......
1. As far as I can tell Mr Benchley said "It sounds good to me" in response to the banning of pellet guns. He was then crushed in an avalanche of people criticising him for revelling in the shooting of a 13 year old boy, which puzzles me. Talk about over-reaction and misinterpretation.

2. "Let's ban elastic bands and paper clips next". A totally absurd comment. The ban is not being suggested due to the lethal potential of pellet guns, the ban is being suggested because somebody is trying to stop kids getting shot.

Kid gets hold of pellet gun, waves it at cop / store owner / neighbour. Cop / store owner / neighbour thinks it's a real gun and shoots kid.

Result - one dead kid+ruined family. One probable "justifiable homicide" verdict and the knowledge that you've killed a kid (or a jail sentence and the same regrets).

Somebody has suggested a ban on pellet guns to prevent this happening again. It may not be the best solution, you may not agree with it, you may not like it......

But for FUCK'S SAKE try and argue about it a bit better than that......even I could have trotted out a few decent arguments against a ban on pellet guns, but instead you descend into gibberish.

No offense intended, it's been a long day and I'm going home now.....

I had just managed to figure out what the din was supposedly all about when I happened down to your post.

Do you suppose that anyone could really, possibly, not have understood that he was referring to the actual point of the post? Could it be that some are, themselves, so practised in the practice of avoiding the points of posts that they now actually do read other people's posts as if they were as bizarrely tangential as their own? That they really can't follow the thread of a thread from the initial post to the first reply??

Well, now that I mention it, yeah. I suppose that it is possible.

As for Jody's quip ... thankfully, I hadn't even started to try to figure it out yet when I read your dismissal of it. Hmm. She's fond of writing posts consisting of headers only (a peculiarly iVillage habit, in my experience). Do you suppose that she thinks that all posts can be absorbed and cogently responded to after merely reading the header? In that case, her reply might make a glimmering of sense ... hey, it's possible.

16. Funniest thing I've seen in a while.
I'm sick I tell ya sick!

Oh wait a minute I must have misunderstood myself.

Unless there is a disease called non sequiteuritis I'm at an absolute loss to see how this:

"In early September, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg by police Capt.

In addition, the measure calls for penalties ranging from a $15,000 fine and five years in prison for selling such devices and a fine of up to $10,000 and 18 months in prison for possession."

Followed by this:

"Sounds good to me"

Could lead to this:

"How on earth can anyone revel in the shooting of a 13 year boy?"

The only thing I can think of is that someone is wearing dirty glasses and actually saw this:

"In early September, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg by police Capt.

Followed by

"Sounds good to me"

So if you ignore the heading of the post and 90% of the text and the entire point of the article it is possible to infer that Benchley likes seeing kids shot. Otherwise, how are we allowed to say it in this forum?

I believe the gentlemen have got their facts wrong.

As for banning paper clips and rubber bands, since Jody seems to have an endless supply of "statistics", I'd like to see how many children have been shot by police for brandishing these implements. Otherwise I'm beginning to fear for the sanity of a few people in these parts.

20. non-sequituritis, you say

How's this one?

Pert says:
BANGS HEAD ON WALL......

... and attempts to vaccinate the assembled crowd against that dread disease.

Then demsrule4life says:
stupid people are everywhere

... and ... is NOT talking about the people in this thread. Almost too much of a coincidence to believe.

I'd thought for a moment that demsrule4life had truly come down with an acute case of sequituritis, or maybe of actual responding-to-point fever, either of which would have been a very salutary thing, but alas and alack, 'twas not to be. Which answered my question about how s/he planned to get around that little 'personal attack' rule.

I must warn you. I'm so tired I can hardly focus on what I'm typing (and have a couple more pages to go to meet a 10 a.m. deadline) -- and these are not the best conditions for hitting me with a few paragraphs in wingdingese. I almost tried to read it.

23. CAN ANYONE BE
this ________________ ?

(You're going to have to fill in the blank for yourselves.)

Did you read the thread AT ALL?

READ Pert's post.

IF you had been referring to a whole lot of people in this thread when you referred to "stupid people" being everywhere, you would have been absolutely, unassailably CORRECT -- and that would not by any stretch of a sensitive moderator's imagination have been an "attack"! (Unless said people had only been trying to LOOK stupid in order to make Benchley look evil ... which ... when you think about it ... is really pretty stupid anyhow.)

Note how I'm not naming any stupid people ... and, for the really stupid people, I'm not calling Benchley evil. (I say this sorta like throwing spilled salt over my shoulder, in a desperate attempt to ward off devils.)

I think jody's trick may be just the trick here. Only read the subject lines ... it might work like throwing salt.

25. Amazing
"And I say more and more laws are passed because of stupid people."

You say that do you? In that case it must be true. I'm afraid in the real world you have to back up such statements with evidence. I must have missed the recent imposition of all these stupidity laws.

This story is about a 13 yr old CHILD who was shot by a policeman who believed he was in danger. He thought he was in danger because the CHILD had a toy. Removing toys that resemble weapons will mitigate the chances of policemen shooting children playing with toys. Now since that logically follows and doesn't involve any mention of either protaganists IQ, could my reasoning in fact be better than yours?

I'm not going to provide any evidence I'm just going to say, "Because I said so"

26. Yea I say so
working law enforcement from 73-02 I don't need any studies to know that stupid people commit crimes and people that are acting stupid always find ways to get themselves or others killed. I went on a call once where a stupid kid was not invited to a party and he decided to come back with a real looking pellet pistol and threatend the kids at the party. When I arrived stupid kid decided that when a real .45 was pointing at him he had a moment of clarity and dropped the gun. Did I think afterwords that pellet pistols should be banned? No.
