Slaying Prompts Newspaper to Reject Gun Ads
Slaying Prompts Newspaper to Reject Gun Ads

Sarasota Publisher: 'The Right Thing to Do'

SARASOTA, Fla. -- (AP)
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune will begin rejecting classified ads for firearms after police say a man used a gun he bought through one of the ads to kill his estranged wife.

Beginning Oct. 1, the paper will accept classified advertisements only for collectible antique firearms made before 1898. The ads must be published in the "Antiques" or "Collectibles" categories. The paper's "Guns & Rifles" category will be eliminated.

Retailers can still advertise firearms in display ads and inserts but they must include their dealer's license number.

The Herald-Tribune said it is the 16th paper in the country and the fifth in Florida to agree to tighter standards for firearms advertising.

1. You know a great way to solve this problem?
Make the NICS system available to private sellers. I would use it every time to sell any of my firearms, if it could be made available to me. Cost? I'll throw that in with the cost of the gun.

2. Do I have my first convert?
A lot of pro-gun types are aghast at the idea of making NICS available for private sellers because they want to be able to keep transactions at "arm's length" thus avoiding the possibility of being held liable for someone else's crimes.

I've been preaching optional NICS for private transfers for about two years. Most people say I'm nuts or it can't be done.

3. If the NICS system
is the standard by which certain people are disqualified from owning weapons, then it should be made available. If anything, it would aleviate liability on the seller's part:

"Look, officer, I sold the gun to him after conducting a NICS check. Then he went and shot that stopsign full of holes."

Any costs can be passed to the consumer, reducing the burden to taxpayers.

4. Who the FUCK do they think they are?
"but they must include their dealer's license number."

That's protected tax information. Expect a lawsuit.

6. Any chance that the gun industry is behind this?
They are the ones likely to make a profit from private individuals not being able to sell their guns.
