A dangerous mix- alcohol and guns

By Mike Wells ~ Southeast Missourian

Missouri's new concealed weapons law doesn't take effect until Oct. 11, but Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle is already telling residents "guns and drunks don't mix -- safely or well."

A portion of the state's new law that allows residents to obtain permits to carry concealed firearms, also elevates the crime of possessing a firearm while intoxicated from a class B misdemeanor to a class D felony -- thus carrying a punishment range of one day in county jail to four years in prison and a fine up to $5,000.

Earlier this month, the state legislature overrode Gov. Bob Holden's veto of the bill. Now, Missouri prosecutors and law enforcement agencies are among those trying to understand and prepare for its possible effects in the state's courts.

Swingle sent a memorandum to area law enforcement leaders saying the change makes a lot of sense and announcing that he intends to "vigorously" prosecute such cases, he said.

1. Agreed, guns and alcohol don't mix
unless you making a little mixed drink and the "gun" is actually a little stirer in the shape of a gun. Then, guns and alcohol do mix.

2. the conceal and carry law in MO
Also bans the carrying of said concealed weapon into any bar or establishment that recieves more than 50% of its revenues from alcohol. As well as stadiums that hold more than 5000 people, etc.....

so I think we have safely established guns and drinkin dont mix well...unless you are in Mississippi :)

4. No disagreement from here...
although I'd rather see the law set up like the drunk driving laws (based on BAC, but with a lower threshold) than say "you can't have guns in bars or restaurants even if you're not drinking."

They're going to have trouble enforcing this....
