Charges for 81-Year-Old Gun-Toting Candidate

POTTSVILLE, PA-September 25, 2003 — An 81-year-old candidate for Schuylkill County commissioner was charged with illegal possession of a firearm after he allegedly carried a handgun into the county courthouse.
Paul K. Brown of Pottsville, who is staging a write-in campaign for the office, is accused of bringing a weapon with an expired license into the courthouse when he announced his candidacy on Sept 17.

Brown was detained as he left the courthouse and received notice of the charge, a third-degree felony, through a mailed summons on Wednesday.

County sheriff's Capt. Dennis Kane said Brown told courthouse security officers that he was carrying a .38-caliber handgun. Brown said he turned over to security officers a locked satchel containing the gun as he entered the courthouse.
