Background checks to be required of all handgun buyers in Indiana

Every buyer of a handgun from an Indiana gun dealer will face a federal background check under new rules taking effect next week.

The changes will alter a decade-old practice in which handgun owners faced a federal check only when renewing a state permit to carry a gun. Those permits must be renewed every four years.

Indiana State Police officials say the stricter rules, which will take effect Wednesday, will keep the state in compliance with the 1994 Brady Law and new federal laws that limit handgun purchases to U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.

"It's possible for the state to approve somebody by state laws that won't be eligible (to buy a gun) by federal laws," said Paul Simmerman, owner of Albro Guns, 4578 S. Emerson Ave., on the Southeastside.

1. Nothing stricter about them
my home state finally falling in line with everyone else with the nics check. And as a side benefit can take a gun home on the same day now, before if you didnt have the permit had to wait 7 days.

In Indiana an individual with a license to carry could already purchase and take a gun home on the same day. The reason is because you passed a background check to get the license. Even though they do not say it, this move saves the state money. We are broke. Now if you buy a gun, the only check done is by the FBI, IF you have a state CCW license..if you do not have an Indiana license, then both state and federal checks are run on the purchase.

Good example, a resident who has a state issued license, but may be up on federal charges in another state, will not be in the Indiana database, but he should be in the Federal database. It is still a simple phone call to proper federal office, check may take longer, say 20 minutes since it is federal govt.

Until we have a working, single, federal database for law enforcement, this is the only way to be sure on out of state charges, and it is really not a sure thing.
