Don't you think that's a bit judgmental, to call all gun owners mentally-unfit? Does that include soldiers, veterans, game wardens, park rangers, police officers, National Guardsman, hunters, etc.?
Take a look at this video from Penn & Teller (it is astounding how sharp these guys are; perhaps we should consider electing more comedians to office...), especially at 0:30, 3:40, and a great summary at 8:10.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iusKWjwi0Wo&feature=relatedBTW, I don't own a gun, but I think it's absolutely insane for citizens to give up a constitutional right, that was so important to the authors of the constitution, that they made it the Second Amendment. Remember, they lived in a much different political climate, but it wasn't so long ago (American was still segregated less than 50 years ago).
Basic idea, guns were made a fundamental part of the Constitution, because who keeps an eye on our "guardians"? It's not paranoia; governments are mutable, and sometimes they change for the worse. America is well-off relative to the rest of the world, but are we so naive to think we are perfect and untouchable? If something unthinkable like the crises in Rowanda or Sudan even happened here, you'd run straight for that WWII Veteran "Crazy's" house...
