1. You forgot the guy shot in the face last night in North Hollywood
a few miles from here. Sitting in a car with a woman when it happened.

Guess someone forgot to tell him the rampant, unchecked spread of guns was keeping him "safer..."

5. i guess i missed the memo
when did the NRA start passing legislation??? i always thought it was congress...guess things changed when i went to mexico

and wasnt this shooting done in the only place the brady camp gave a "passing" grade to on their gun laws

You talk as if the NRA is this all powerful- omnipotant being that is manipulating everyone- the NRA gets its power from its members- who VOTE- and vote in large numbers

When you vote as a group in large numbers- you get attention- and thats why the gun rights movement is so powerful.

7. last time i checked
congress passed the legislation- the NRA might have lobbied for it- but the final decision still rests with the legislatures

10. Last time I checked, you couldn't be bothered with even a word of empathy or sympathy
for the shooting victims or their families.

Just the usual rhetorical feints and parries to protect your beloved, thoroughly fetishized guns.

13. if posting on a forum
is considered the litmus test for empathy/sympathy- well then count me out...I'm sorry if i don't see the point in posting my sympathy's at every turn. that doesnt mean i have sympathy for the families and the individuals- i do- but i keep it to myself

I don't know sometimes...maybe its that i have seen more death in my young life than anyone should see in there entire life- but i shouldnt really complain- i made the choice- but personally, im not a fan of pity parties- i find them disingenous.

15. You have NO CLUE
what empathy or sympathy I have expressed for the families of the TWO CLOSE, CLOSE, CLOSE friends I have lost due to the violent actions of CRIMINALS.

I just happen to be mature enough and logical enough to blame the fucking criminal, not the gun.

Though that doesn't change the general callousness this forum has to the victims of gun violence.

Hell, one might almost think there was a reason for saying that.

Surely you aren't still so illogical as to think someone else had blamed a gun, or so immature as to insinuate that even though you know it isn't true?

27. Hell, I thought you were talking to *me*. If not, fergit it, etc.
threads in this sub-forum always spin out of control (unless there's lockstep agreement with NRA talking points), attacks substitute for discussion, the name-calling invariably breaks out, etc.

It all gets wearying and dispiriting, really. So, if the mistake was mine, amends, etc.

8. Pretty Pathetic
I recall a statement you once made -

"You seem to equate kindness and compassion with weakness. Actually, those things have more to do with strength."

But here you are blaming a dead man and inanimate objects for criminal acts and accidents.

"Charlton Heston's legacy"

Don't ever question me again about kindness and compassion until you learn what those two words mean.

9. Spoonman; eloquent as ever.
A dead man who urged people to buy more guns and worked for a gun lobby. He is indirectly responsible for perhaps thousands of gun deaths.

I'm glad you recalled something I once told you, though. Maybe you're learning.

14. Apply Your Logic
To the thousands of everyday people who manufacture firearms and ammo.

Yeah, they are so responsible too!

Oh, lets not forget all those auto and distillery workers, they are "responsible" for the THOUSANDS of drunk driving fatalities that occur every year.

Shit while we're at it, lets include all those people that do the ads on teevee and magazines for the manufacturers.

etc, etc, etc. Some logic you have there Zanne, and maybe your not learning.

You obviously don't believe in what you post.

25. ...and in the two days since your last press-release crosspost...
Edited on Mon Apr-07-08 07:59 PM by benEzra
several guns sat peacefully in a safe in benEzra's house, and didn't kill anyone, didn't threaten to kill anyone, didn't go off by accident, and didn't make anyone except Paul Helmke cry.

In other news, several hundred thousand people once again went shooting this week and didn't harm anybody, and ~80 million gun owners, 35 to 40 percent of U.S. households, and a quarter to a third of U.S. Dems and indies managed to survive another week with guns in their homes. OMG.

29. I have just one question
You post these "shooting gallery" posts claiming a high death rate from firearms. Have you looked into murders committed without the use of firearms on a per date basis? I googled some dates at random for homicides and found a lot that were non firearm related. There were quite a few with cars, knives, bats, and even musical instruments.

What is your take on this?

35. But there are more blunt trauma murders
and homicides (justifiable or not) than deaths by firearms. There are more suicides by razor blades and prescription drugs than by firearms.

My point is this. No matter if guns are there or not, malicious intent is the cause. Not the tool used. Britain banned firearms, now they are restricting knives, clubs, and other instruments because crimes using these items has skyrocketed. Their crime rate is higher now than before their gun ban. Why? No fear. The criminals have very little to fear from their unarmed victims. They can comfortably use other things as weapons. I wonder how long the stupidity will last over there. I'm surprised that the Brits haven't revolted yet.

37. allow me to clarify
I speak of willful homicide, intentional or unintentional. It's kinda unlikely to find many suicides by blunt force trauma since it's kind of a nasty way to go.

and all manslaughter deaths by firearms, are exceeded by... knife deaths?

And you don't just mean "in a production of 'West Side Story?'"

39. Um, no, read my post
I said blunt trauma. A knife wound is not blunt trauma. Being hit in the head by a baseball bat is blunt trauma, being hit by a tire iron is blunt trauma. Being stabbed by a knife is a laceration.
