Poll question: Do you think it should be legal to bring a gun to the zoo?
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 04:52 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
It's a simple question.

Edit: Feel free to replace "zoo" with movie theater, restaurant, school, etc.

7. If you're so afraid when you go to the zoo,
that you need to bring a gun, you should probably just stay locked inside your house with your head under the covers. Same goes for most public places that people want to bring guns to.

I think the zoo should retain the right to disallow weapons of any type on their premises.

That the people who answer "No" would be the same people that would say "No" pretty much regardless of what public place it is. I can't see a reason for "zoo" to be different than "restaurant".

42. Some of the first gun laws in the South allowed whites to carry in church...
Just after the first slave rebellions, laws were passed allowing whites to carry guns to church in the belief that rebellions were most likely to occur on Sundays when the "massah" and his family were away and plantations were more vulnerable. BTW, when blacks rebelled, the first thing they acquired were guns.

From the rebellions forward, you began to see all manner of gun-controls in the South -- designed to disarm blacks.

15. Why not, cops do. And given some threads around here, I trust my neighbor more with a gun
than I do cops with even a taser (and this coming from someone who has defended cops in the past).

If the only people you want to trust are those in power, well...that is kinda scary to me.

A better poll would be, "Should people have right to carry unconcealed firearms in public?"

I'm dying here, man.
Ten loony birds strap their guns on and go to the zoo - you can't make this shit up!!

What I really want to know is, did that one fucking asshole of a monkey throw his shit at them, like he does to everyone else that stares at him, or did he refrain, knowing they were armed?

23. Have at it
If your state allows CCW, which all but two do, and you've gone through the proper procedures then CC and enjoy your day at the zoo(movie theater, restaurant, school...).
Might have helped a couple SF stoners a few months ago fight off a pissed off (and rare) four legged predator. Much more likely that you need it to defend yourself against a psycho on two legs but my XD-40 comes in handy either way. And unless anyone was that 2 or 4 legged predator they'd never know I had it.

PS: those idiots at the SF zoo brought that tragedy on themselves.

but you do what you gotta do.
My advice is to to empty the mag into the 500 lb. tiger, then run.
Sure beats the old joke about the two guys hiking in the woods when they encounter a Grizzly Bear. The first dude stops to change into his running shoes, the second asks him - "what the hell are you doing? You can't outrun that bear." - the second one says - "I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!".

save your life? Interesting. Some of us are willing to risk our lives to fight, and protect others. Not sure why you would mock us.

As far as a Tiger goes, I would think a .40 or .45 should be sufficient to stop this type of anmial, shot placement of course being the more critical factor. Should get a foot or more of penetration.

38. Handguns did stop that tiger
If I were those cops that had to go in after it I would have been shaking in my boots, but I guess the .40 is really an underestimated round. Plus cats are pretty thin skinned and lightly built for their size, a bear of the same rough height and length would probably weigh 1.5-2x as much as the cat. I would have dumped at least one mag into the animal before I paused.

28. The question is not phrased well.
The question should be, Should licensed and registered people who have a concealed weapons permit be allowed to keep their weapons while in the zoo?

I assume that is what was meant, so I voted YES to the question. I have no problem with responsible, and people educated in the laws on the use of firearms, to keep their weapons with them any more than I worry about cops having their guns with them.

34. It's kind of inconvenient to leave them home when...
If guns are for self defense then they are most useful outside the home where you are more likely to be physically attacked. But if you're going to any public destination you have to leave them home, which defeats the purpose.

I think zoos and public locales should have a gun check at the front desk so you can be protected on the streets but also keep the weapons out of the destination place.

36. do you now

I think zoos and public locales should have a gun check at the front desk

You think the costs and risks of some individuals' loony and self-centred choices should be passed on to the general public / publics of the "public locales" in question.

Maybe you think that there should be a charge for this "gun check" that would amount to a user-pay system. Such a charge could cover the material and human resources needed to perform this function. I'm not sure how much it would cost to completely eliminate the risk of checked firearms falling into the wrong hands, and why anyone should be required to assume that risk and bear any costs that result if the risk materializes.

Not when the risk can be 100% averted by LEAVING THE FUCKING THING AT HOME. Properly secured against theft, of course.

39. Many places that don't allow firearms
have accomodations for their storage while people who carry are at the location. Some state court buildings for instance. Usually they just have lockboxes set into the walls that the people can use, and they just get them out on their way back out. For that to be justified, the place has really got to have a need for constant security presence, like a courthouse. It is incredibly cheap to have some strongboxes built into solidly constructed walls, and so long as there is an actual security screening process for people entering the area it is legitimate. If its honor cyctem, it would be foolish for people to use them unless it were a water park or someplace similiar where the firearm would be at risk of loss or damage.

Does the zoo screen every visitor for weapons? Any place that bans lawful possession of weapons should. If not, then it's a phony gun-free zone.
