Thom Hartman likes shooting guns
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 11:23 AM by NightWatcher
listening to the national show. He's commenting on visiting friends and the fun he had "shooting off a few hundred rounds". He also commented that he didnt see the obligatory "osama or men with turban" targets anymore, suggesting that maybe we are begining to pull away from the ignorant xenophobia of the meme regarding all turbans as terrorists.

Just because we are enlightened progressives who favor peace, does not mean that we dont like to blow some holes in paper sometimes.

Bought it to keep my Dad busy tinkering and reloading and my chance to own a piece of American history. :patriot:

And they shoot sweet also. :P No paper stands a chance!

I enjoy shooting myself and whenever I've shot a garand the one thing I think of is I couldn't imagine carrying one on a battlefield along with all the other stuff one has to pack.. ugg

I'm not that tough. I'm a wussy gurl:-)

4. this is not neccessarily "gungeon worthy". I was addressing the fact that you can have fun shooting
without being a "gun nut"

Nobody's saying you can't. Certainly not moi.

Somebody should be along here any minute now crying "straw man", and actually have a point this time.

9. Guns damaged my hearing
Hunting is necessary to control deer herds (and, as more people rely on it, food). But, I think as personal protection they are oversold.

26. A third of gun owners are WOMEN, dude...
and the only people I have encountered who view guns as sexualized power objects are people who are either have little experience with them, or are terrified of them. Freud had some things to say about that, AFAIK...

Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 11:36 AM by onehandle
He said this three minutes ago.

Respects the need of those who have to kill for food, but that there is something wrong with those who hunt for fun.

8. the only thing I've ever shot was a piece of paper
I do and have carried for work (defense not so much as offense).

I wish more people could differentiate between shooting paper targets for fun and the crazed hunters that kill Bambi for shits and giggles.

15. Many people shoot Bambi for food...
Like you I've only shot paper. However I've known many responsible hunters who don't hunt for "shits and giggles".

My ex-wife for example prefers wild game to meat bought in the local food store. In the area I currently live, many people hunt for deer and hog in season. The country I live in is one of the poorest county in Florida, so I can say honestly that these people are hunting for food. There is no shortage of deer in this area despite the hunters. Numerous accidents occur when a deer runs out in front of a car.

With the price of everything climbing at an alarming rate, I am now considering hunting to offset my rising grocery bill. I'm retired and the idea of living on cat food doesn't appeal to me.

28. I've hunted since I was about 6 years old.
There is nothing better in the world than being in nature that way. Plus, venison is just fantastic and healthy as you can get. I try to fill all of the tags I get each year. If I run out of room in the freezer, I donate the extra meat to Hunters for the Hungry.

On a more serious note though, we need hunters bad and I mean REAL bad. Man has killed off or reduced the population of natural predators of deer so bad that there really is no control on the population except hunting. Due to the limited hunting opportunities in many areas and poorly thought out hunting restrictions and regulations, the deer populations have exploded. This has led to over grazing which has damaged the environment and natural habitat of the deer and other animals. Disease is now becoming a problem in some areas due to the over population as well. Cronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been identified in many areas of the country now. There has been an increase in rabies among deer populations as well (yes, deer get rabies and can be damned dangerous).

As has already been discussed, deer/vehicular accidents are at an all time high. Deer are invading residential areas and are being pushed into developed parts that they would normally not approach.

The end result is that deer are a pest species and need to be controlled. Every time a deer gets hit by a car, insurance costs go up.

Oh yeah, nice Garand above. They don't make guns of that quality anymore.

17. I think you stereotype a la CBS's "Guns of Autumn"...
one of the worst hatchet jobs done to hunting. The folks I know are serious hunters who kill, field dress, skin, quarter and either butcher or see to butchering their game.

And I enjoy hunting.

21. So...
hiking out into the woods and hunting for your own food is psychotic, but having a giant factory slaughtering millions of animals so McDonalds can make 99 cent burgers as cheaply as possible is totally cool.
P.S. I don't hunt.

24. Note that
these are not mutually exclusive. Every hunter I personally know hunts for food AND fun.

I would suggest the primal hunter (not so much gatherer) part of our human nature is satisfied by the hunt. Similar to shopping, for some people :)

And the meat is obviously a big part of it. I have munched on Elk jerky because of my hunter friends

12. SKS outing
Nothing like paper punching at the range on a nice weekend.

I would like to go out more often, but my range doesn't allow FMJ, and the Soft Point around my area gets pretty expensive.

19. Any time!
Georgia Arms might be a good place to look as well, they sell some good loads they make in house. Never tried their x39mm, not even positive they have it, but they load much more obscure cartridges than that so I can't imagine they are lacking it. They are pretty good on price as well. Probably be around twenty to twenty five for a fifty round loose bag, how they ship all their ammo.

23. You can mail-order it if you can't find it locally.
http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0022899215187a.shtml

It's also arguably the best 7.62x39mm load for hunting, if you're into that. By all accounts the 154-grain load it is more accurate than the 122-grain load, probably because it is produced in smaller quantities.

Just make sure that your range allows steel cases (the bullet is lead with a bimetal jacket, but the cartridge case is steel). Most ranges do, but some ranges don't, usually because they want you to buy their expensive and dubious brass-cased reloads instead.
