Weapons that can shatter concrete

Semiautomatic assault rifles have returned, and cops who face them know all too well what they can do

By PATRICE O'SHAUGHNESSY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Fully automatic gun turns brick to powder. Semiautomatics can be modified to do same.

The Cold AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle is long, black and sleek and shoots .223-caliber ammunition, or 2-inch long bullets.

For 10 years, the sale and manufacture of the fearsome weapon was illegal anywhere in America .

Last week, as some Southern stores resumed sale of the rifle, Police Officer Darrell Corti demonstrated its destructive power.

Corti aimed the weapon at a cinderblock at the NYPD firing range at Rodman's Neck in the Bronx and pulled the trigger. The burst of gunfire rang loudly in the ears despite protective gear. The narrow bullet traveled at such a high velocity that it pierced a half-dollar-sized hole in the inch-thick side of the stone before shattering into shiny fragments.

The round is capable of penetrating some bulletproof vests.

"These are weapons of war, and to make them more readily available is certainly a concern for us," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "It is a concern for police officers because they're the ones at 2 a.m. who are most likely to confront these types of weapons."

1. Hiding in the dark....
That is all it takes to frighten the uninformed and uneducated masses. A misleading error filled report with some visual stimulation. This is sensationalism feeding on ignorance. Take a lever action .30-30 or a single shot .30-06 rifle and see what they do against soft armor, stone, brick, etc. They describe a gun as "menacing". So now we have to ban any gun that people perceive as scary looking because that is just too offensive to bear? Geo Storms are offensive looking, so I think that they should be confiscated and banned.... I would like to see a 2" long .223 bullet. So now we are trying to ban scary looking varmint bullets also? Pretty soon they will be out to ban .22lr hollow points because they are offensive looking also.

2. "Cold" AR-15?
Er, that's Colt.

Manufacture and sale of AR-15 type rifles was never illegal. Only marketing under the name "AR-15" was restricted, and that only for rifles manufactured after September 1994. Most AR-15 type rifles were never called "AR-15" anyway, as that is a trademark of Colt.

"Last week, as some Southern stores resumed sale of the rifle"

Stores all over the country (except in California) never stopped selling them. Far more AR-15 type rifles were sold between 1994 and 2004 than in all the previous decades combined, making it one of the most popular centerfire rifles in the United States even before the Feinstein non-ban expired in 2004.

Geez, that was an ignorant piece.

3. Ooooo! I'm so scared!
That "journalist" should get a peek at what a 30-06 can do. That's a traditional "Fudd" gun that will be all over the woods in just a few weeks when deer season gets going. It usually comes in a highly accurate bolt action, just like special forces snipers use. I used to be able to shoot our semi-auto M1 Garand accurately out to about 500 yards. My dad was good for even longer distances. If they fear "powerful" cartridges then they'd better start making a list. I won't even get started on my Preacher's Barrett rifle.

Guess what the most popular firearm sold all over the South right before Gustav hit was? Yeah, the good old AR15. Bought legally by lawful citizens who suddenly felt the urge to protect themselves when government was temporarily going to be "busy" with other matters, the AR15 is quite popular these days. I predict it's popularity will go even higher as more and more vets from Iraq make it home and as police officers begin to adopt it as their long arm. I've known very few people who have shot one and didn't like it. The same thing happened when departments started issuing the fearsome and deadly Glock pistol, you know, the one that rendered all security measures known in the twentieth century obsolete?

When it's 2:00 AM and I'm waiting for the police to arrive, guess what I'll use to protect my family till they get there.

6. Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock used a Winchester Model 70 deer rifle in .30-06,
wooden stock and all, with an Unertl 10x scope. As I recall, he had multiple 1000+ yard kills with it.

At close range, a .30-06 deer rifle with softpoint hunting ammunition will shoot through 5/8" steel plate, at minimum.

7. They'll want to ban that next.
We shot military surplus out of the Garand. It was really rough on the target holders.

My point is, and I'm sure yours is too, that it's silly for the police to worry about this or that gun based on it's appearance. AR's just don't figure into enough crimes to warrant all this attention.

4. Well
'Colt' but that was already pointed out.

Any center-fire rifle can pierce a stupid cinder block, except perhaps a .22
Any center-fire rifle can pierce most police body armor, unless it hits a 5x5 inch steel plate usually placed over the heart.
Very few semi-automatics can be easily modified to fire full auto, any rifle that can, without a replacement of available parts, or major modification to the weapon, is regulated as a fully-automatic weapon by the BATFE.
Rifles are used in very, very few crimes, according to the FBI.
Most criminals do not use $2,000+ rifles.
A .223 cartridge is perhaps close to 2 inches in length, but the bullet is only a little over a half inch long.
Rifles are loud, news at 11.
Only the sale of new rifles was prohibited by the AWB, and there are legal AR-15's that were sold during that period, featuring welded flash suppressors, no bayonet lugs, fixed stocks, etc.

5. Two inch long bullets?
It shoots two inch long bullets, like the ones this Iraqi woman found that supposedly struck her house?

The "bullets" it shoots are usually around .7" long. The "Cartridges" is uses are about 2.25" long.

I also have hammers that can shatter concrete. And to think that my 5 year old son can buy a hammer! Holy crap, we better do something about that!
