"Self protection measures are the best way..."
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 09:11 AM by gorfle
I found the below quote interesting. It's basically a direct analog to personal self-defense. Obviously the navies of the world have figured this out, too.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/11/17/kenya.tanker.pirates/index.html

"Piracy is an international crime that threatens global commerce. Shipping companies have to understand that naval forces can not be everywhere. Self protection measures are the best way to protect their vessels, their crews, and their cargo."

2. Some ships are hiring mercenaries to protect them through high-risk areas. That's not unlike
high-profile entertainers hiring body guards for protection to a gala to raise money for groups who want to deny law-abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense.

SCOTUS says government is not obligated to protect an individual but the odds are near 100% that government will use DoD to protect corporations in international waters.

That is what We the People are paying for with our tax dollars, isn't it?

4. But don't they know that they're like 10x more likely
to shoot themselves by accident than to successfully defend themselves from an attacker?

7. Armed merchantmen would not be attacked
If pirates understood that the ships they were targeting were crewed by armed, trained and determined men, they would find other lines of work, like shaking down ice cream peddlers. High seas piracy is good business now because the ships are easy pickings.

Armed merchantmen would be a deterrent against attack. If merchant ships were armed, piracy would fade away with no shots being fired.

The reason we won't see armed merchantmen any time soon is because of the gun control laws in the world's ports of call. Ships stocked with defensive small arms would not be allowed into most harbors to pick up or unload freight.

High seas piracy: another victory for gun control.
